Real Time Thoughts

Stealing this idea from Bill Simmons.

Just under 11:38 to go in the first half of the IU v. Minnesota game and I’m gonna try my damnedest to give my impressions as the game progresses. I was distracted for the first 8 minutes by a guy playing an Inspector Gadget?Beverly Hills Cop medley on a flute, so I didn’t get to start right away.

11:38 In the last four plays Erik Suhr has taken two charges and hit a jump shot from just inside the top of the key. The single most exciting play in basketball is a player taking a charge.

11:23 Except when the other team does it. DJ just picked up his second foul on the offensive end

10:22 Suhr deflects a pass. Well played passing lane.

10:11 Lance Stemler takes a charge! That’s four total since I started typing. DJ takes a seat.

9:37 Second possession in a row for Bassett to score on a jumper off the dribble. It’ll be nice to see what he can do when he’s past his Freshman mistakes

9:19 Wilmont 3! I read this morning that Coach Sampson had to tell Wilmont to shoot more 3s, as he’s only take 5 in the last fourr games or something insane like that. That must have been a strange conversation, having to remind someone to do what it is they most like to do in the whole world.

8:00 Laura just reminded me that i should be watching more basketball and 90210 reruns.

7:53 This experiment is the perfect example of why I’m trying to teach my students to type with all ten fingers. I would never be able to do this if I couldn’t watch the game while I type.

5:05 I’m not ready to kill and bury Lance Stemler, like some people I know, but he hasn’t made an open shot in close to two months. He plays very well on Defense and does a lot of the little things it takes to win a game, but he just missed another wide open 3 that was the result of good ball movement, and well you guessed it.

4:16 Did you know that Noble Romans puts over 90 pepperoni’s on it’s stuffed pepperoni pizza? Count your pepperoni’s today.

4:00 IU just ran a play where Lance Stemler and Mike White were supposed to set three different double screens. Neither one of them touched a Minnesota player on any of those screens. Screening and boxing out have got to be the two parts of the game that are the least taught today. I’ll let you know when I see a good screen set.

2:45 Hey, Sam, is it just me or does Earl Calloway remind you of a much less stoned Dre?

Halftime: I have trouble believing the time out Sampson called with :35 left in the half involved these words. Armon, dribble a lot, but don’t go anywhere. Then throw a really bad pass to Wilmont so he can bail you out with a three at the buzzer. If so, nice job boys.

18:05 Minnesota either doesn’t watch tape, or doesn’t have the personnel to make this work, but they are not doubling Dj. If he’s doubled well he has a great deal of trouble getting the ball to the open man. When not doubled he’s a rock star, and if they stick with this and he stays on the court (8 minutes in the first half) he’s gonna kill them.

18:01 I just watched the blind date OSU Michigan commercial for ESPNU. The OSU guy goes from interested in this woman, who he apparently can’t be bothered to pick up in his car (good first impression) to possessed with anger in about .5 seconds. All the acting skill of a young, bald Keanu.
These are the things you notice when you see the same commercial about 500 times. This is our country, after all.

14:01 Very lackluster double team from Minnesota. Still worked

13:54 IU’s only up by 6. Ridiculous.

13:37 Turns out beign closely gaurded doesn’t help Lance’s shooting woes.

13:16 Great. Now it’s a 3 point game

12:48 Wilmont just took a contested jump shot off the dribble. I haven’t seen a good open shot caused by passing or penetration from IU in about 5 minutes.

12:35 Wilmont just took the most slow-motion like charge I’ve ever seen. He was there for about 5 seconds and still the guy plowed into him, very slowly.

11:26 Minnnesota has gone double team on DJ every time he touches the ball. He hasn’t scored since they made this change. It would be nice if we had some other bigs who could double him in practice  so could learn how to either score or pass out of it.

11:07 Third charge of the game for Erik Suhr. That’s fantastic!

10:13 That was the single cheapest positioning offensive foul I’ve ever seen. Dj now has 3

9:22 DJ hard to the bucket. IU up by four. Points of penetration and a pass. Very nice

7:49 NICE! Wilmont penetration kicked out to Joey Shaw. A long possession that saw one made free throws, a tip out on the miss and a three pointer. IU by 6.

7:21 That long defensive possession for Minnesota looks like it took it’s toll. Very sloppy pass, turn over. IU ball after the BIG FLAGS!!!!!

6:59 IU is shooting 26% in the second half and with shots like the one Bassett just got to fall I have no trouble seeing why. The shot selection has been pretty poor.

6:16 DJ from 15. Wide Open 10 point lead

5:40 Horrible! Wilmont drives and takes a horrible shot. Followed up by a foul 90 feet from the basket. Dumber than a bag of hammers

4:50 Third time this half IU has run the double high screen set. This time leaving a wide open lane for Bassett to drive the hole.

4:18 Don’t know what they’ve done with the lighting in Assembly Hall this year, or maybe it’s ESPN regionals fault, but the glare off the court this year is driving me crazy. It’s so bright the floor looks like one huge blur. Am I the only one who is being bothered by this?

2:29 IU by 12. Looks like they got it done. This is the fifth game in a row that I’ve not been overly impressed with how this team is playing. They are winning the games they are supposed to win, but the ones where they can win them if they play well, they are not getting it done. It’s time to turn the pressure up and get a good push these last few conference games.

1:30 This is a team that can be playing for the Big Ten Tourney Title and should be a legit sweet 16 team this year. But it’s gonna take more than they’ve shown in February so far.

:40 Time to run out the clock. Not very pretty, but a much needed win. and Lance Stemler just hit a shot.

End: 71-59. IU is now 18-8 (8-5)

Was this interesting at all? Let me know. It was kind of fun to do and I think I’ll enjoy going back and rereading it, but who knows.

Shame on You

Everyone knows my love of television, but this year I’ve turned a corner, dropping a number of shows I’ve decided I no longer cared about. So now is the time for me to tell you all. Shame on you if you aren’t watching these shows.

1) Veronica Mars:
For anyone who misses is Buffy, this is next best thing. Smart dialogue, involved and interesting story telling, and the only season finale last year that actually made me horribly sad, and then overjoyed. Plus, I just watched an episode where Logan (Veronica’s on-again-off-again) is playing Mario Kart, bonus point. Plus, the writer’s make a concerted effort each episode to quote the Big Lebowski.

2) Battlestar Gallactica
Without a doubt the best Sci-Fi since the fourth season of X-Files. And like any good Sci-Fi the show is about characters and tackles current issues, politics, religion, suicide bombings, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. If you like Sci-Fi, it is unforgivable that you aren’t watching this. If you don’t, you should still be watching this show. It’s just great television.

3) Heroes
Best new show of the season. A TON of characters (maybe a couple too many, but I’ll not complain) very cool premise, A TON of people who find they all have special powers, and their paths keep crossing as they either wittingly or unwittingly play a role in the destruction of New York City, and maybe the world. Each episode brings us closer to the explosive climax and provides new insights into why they developed these powers and how they are all connected. George Takei, whose liscence plate just happens to read NCC-1701. Bonus Points.

4) The Wire
Not currently on. The fourth season just concluded a couple of months ago. This may be the best show that’s ever been on telelvision. Brutally realistic show about the drug game in Baltimore. Characters on both sides of the law that you legitimately care about. Characters that are so well written and acted that they are painfully real, in their aspirations, mistakes, and moments of real humor. Plus there has never been a character quite like Omar on television. I’ve never pulled so hard for a character who has done some of the truly brutal things that Omar has done. If you have Netflix or OnDemand do yourself a favor and start from the beginning of this show and don’t miss an episode. You won’t always feel good about what you see, but you won’t be sorry you saw it.

Anybody else surprised by this

I heard two things today, unrelated except that my initial reaction
to both was "There’s no way that’s right." Except, I had no other reason to doubt the voracity of these claims than it just seemed impossible.

1. Carson Daly’s talk show has been on the air for 5 years. Karma.

2. Mike Krzyzewski turned 60 today.

Bob Knight is 66. I guess that’s why I am so shocked that Coach K is that old. Is it just me or is there the general impression that Bob Knight is at the tail end of his career and everyone expects Krzyzewski to coach for a while still. This shoots my thought that Krzyzewski will pass Knight on the wins list. If he’s only six years younger it seems much more unlikely.

And Carson Daly’s still on TV! Really?

What a difference a year makes

This may come as a terrific "I’m coming to join you, Elizabeth" sized shock to many of you, but sometimes I can be a little thick. There were two separate comments posted to this blog over the past month, one from "c_franz" the other from "m_pelkowski" I was confused by these comments as they had what appeared to be my cousins e-mail address. Most of you won’t know why I was such an r-tard in this instance, but if you know who I am, and who Chuck Franz and Magnus Pelkowski are, you’ll know why this was really stupid of me.

Anyway, Magnus requested that I post on the IU basketball team this season. That seems reasonable as I spend a lot of time thinking about that and I’m certainly not short on opinions.

IU plays Illinois tomorrow at home.  At this time last year, if IU had beaten the conference leader, pulling themselves in 2nd place only one game behind in the loss column and then lost on the road at Iowa I would have thrown up my hands, thinking "well, that figures." And followed that up with a feeling of dread about the next game.

Under the same circumstances this year, I fell pretty good. This is not a great team, but they are a good team, a team that can contend for the conference title, but not one likely to win it. Ohio State and Wisconsin are not likely to lose more than another game or so. We took care of Wisconsin at home, but lost to Ohio State on the road, and we don’t play either team again, so it’s a bit out of our hands at this point.

This team is very well coached. The play a style of basketball that is fun to watch, and more importantly is solid basketball. They rebound well from tough losses and the losses they have, with the exception of the Illinois game, have not played poorly. That game was just atrocious. All the losses have been close, and winning on the road in conference is always very difficult.

Tons more to say about IU basketball, but if I say it all today this will be the longest post in the history of blogging, so I’ll call it here. What do my other IU fans think? As I live in Illinois, where we don’t have real basketball, I don’t get to have this conversation as much as I’d like. Though on the plus side I run into WAAAYYYY fewer Kentucky fans, so that’s a huge plus.

My Prerogative

I was just chatting with Sam and he brought up seeing Pulp Fiction again, and his need to do so. When I first saw this movie I absolutely hated it. I didn’t find it particularly funny, thought it was largely violent for the sake of being violent. I liked it’s non-linear structure, but that was about it. I’ve done a complete 180 on this movie. I wouldn’t say I love it, or even put it on a list of top-whatever, but I do really like it. It got me to to thinking about other movies I completely misjudged the first time around, and for some reason gave another viewing.

1.) Dr. Strangelove: Or how I learned to Stop Worrying and love the Bomb (1964)
Man, I couldn’t have been more wrong about this one. I chalk this up to youth. I first saw this in high school and I just didn’t get it. I thought it was slow, with a couple of funny moments, but that was about it. This is, without a doubt, one of the 5 best movies ever made. Cold-War satire at the heart of the red scare. It takes balls to make a movie accusing everyone involved in both sides of the arms race of sexual dysfunction when most of the world is busy hiding under their school desks and buying fall out shelters in preparation for the nuclear holocaust.

2.) Raising Arizona (1987)
When i saw this I thought it was just about the dumbest thing ever. I sat there jaw opened and staring at the absolute idiocy that is H.I. McDunnough. What I know now that I didn’t know then, was that this movie is just about perfect. The entire story, and just about all of the pertinent characters are introduced in the first 10 minutes, and their all done by voice-over, and (and this part you don’t even notice until it happens) all before the opening credits. This also rates very highly on the J. Evans Pritchard scale for what makes a truly great comedy. Y Axis – Holds up to multiptle viewing. X-Axis – Quotability. I can only think of one or tow movies that get a higher overall score than Raising Arizona. BTW, 10 bonus points for correctly identifying Mr. J. Evans Pritchard.

3.) Star Wars Episode i: The Phantom Menace (1999)
This one goes the other way. I was one of the few people not to completely trash this movie when I first saw it. I was admittedly grading on a curve. I knew that the 20+ years of anticipation had created expectations that no movie could possibly match. I didn’t think it was great, but I thought it was fun and worked well enough. I wasn’t willing to kill it because it didn’t elicit in me the same emotions that the original trilogy did, and still do. But after repeated viewing, this movie is almost unwatchable. Young Anakin is horribly annoying, there are few things as intrinsically dull as trade  disputes. Ben Stein’s delivery about the Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act is exactly as exciting as all trade disputes are, and it serves as the lynch-pin of the whole story. Not to mention the pod-racing, which made for a fun video game, but was about as essential to the plot as, well it just wasn’t very essential to the plot was it? I apologize to anyone I ever disagreed with about this movie. I hope we can still be friends.

That seems like a good place to start. I’d be interested to see other people’s 180s.

Who’s that little old man?

I was just reading Sen. Joe Biden’s comments about Barrack Obama. This whole thing has been completely blown out  of proportion. He was clearly just comparing Obama to Paul’s grandfather.

Of course this implies that Obama is  "A King Mixer" and "Hates Group Unity." I also hear he’s been forging  Senators signatures on their photos to sell on e-bay, pointing out to Joe Leiberman that Ted Kennedy’s always being taller than him just to spite him, and pretending he’s Evan Bayh and taking his invitation to the gambling club.

Still, he’s very clean.

So this is what it feels like, when Doves Cry

Through a promotion from AMC Theaters  Laura and I were able to go see Freedom Writers for free on Friday night. This deal is open to all teachers in the U.S. and Canada, through February 1st. I guess the fear is that if it goes through the 2nd people will be able to see it over and over again.

Anyway, I went into this movie with pretty low expectations. I like Swank, especially as she brings Oscar gold to my Aaron Spelling theory. For those who know not of this theory and it’s undeniable truth, I’ll have to post on that another time. But, I’ve seen this movie where the pretty white teacher saves the urban youth. Sadly, I premenisce, no "Weird" Al song coming from this movie.

It was meant to be an uplifting tale about how a caring and motivated teacher can reach a group of students about whom others have forgotten. And she does reach these students. Over the course of two years the racial and gang lines that divide these students outside the classroom cease to exist inside room 203.

Here’s the problem with this movie. If you’re a teacher, it’s extraordinarily depressing. What I took from this movie is not that one teacher can make a difference. I know that already, I feel I already do, or else I wouldn’t be able to do this job well, nor continue to do it at all. Without giving too much away, and if you don’t want to know more about it than I’ve already written, please go read one of the other wonderfully interesting posts below, in order to reach these kids Mrs. G, has to overcome the resistance of her department chair, the jealousy of her more experienced and tenured colleagues, and a lack of resources.

To do this, she has to, get this, take not one, but two part time jobs during the school year, buy books for her students out of her own pocket. go over the head of her chair and principal to the school board, and oh, yeah, watch her marriage disintegrate and fall apart.

Did you read that last part? In order to do the job that needs to be done to help her students, she has to forfeit her marriage. The message of this movie is, you can help disadvantaged students. You can do truly fantastic things, and help kids as a teacher, if you are willing to take two outside jobs give up your personal life, and lose your marriage. God, that’s awful!

This movie ends up being an indictment of the educational system. And it makes me sad.

On another note, this movie was set in 1994, and I did not see one hi-top fade. I realize they were on the way out by then, but still. Here’s a wonderful list of people who wore high-top fades. At least one of these students should have had one.

Fades not-with-standing it’s a pretty decent movie. Swank does a nice job, and doesn’t end up paralyzed, dead, or dating Steve Sanders so that’s a plus for her. And this teacher she portrays really did do something wonderful for her students and is continuing to try and do wonderful things for other students, so that is also a plus. I just couldn’t shake the sadness I felt at all she had to do just to do her job. I can’t think of many other professions where you have to take two outside jobs just so you can do your primary job well.

It’s the principality of the thing

Shocker to the world, but American Idol is to me what IU football is to most of the world.  (see previous posts and comments as to what this means; also, for more info on this point, go to Google and type in the keyword "sports").

This is a report on last night’s episode from the Baltimore Sun:

The next contestant, Janita Burks, says that her style "works in with
my confidentiality."

In case you were wondering, no, she was not discussing her ability to keep her dealings secret.  I am looking down my nose, through my glasses and your computer screen at you.
